Amazon Funds Gas Plant in Texas for AI Data Centers

Amazon is financing the construction of a gas power plant in Texas, which could become the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. The project, named GW Ranch, will supply electricity to data centers and will not be connected to a power grid. It will feature 35 turbines with a total capacity of 7.65 gigawatts. The plant, located in Pecos County near the Mexico border, will be permitted to emit over 30 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually. Amazon claims that generating its own energy will prevent increased costs for American citizens, whose electricity bills have risen due to the infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence. An Amazon spokesperson indicated that the new data center campus will operate with on-site generation and is designed to connect to the grid in the future. Although gas plants are less polluting than coal plants, they are responsible for significant emissions and methane leaks, a potent greenhouse gas. They also emit toxic gases and fine particles that can be hazardous to health.
