Apple Requests Court to Halt OpenAI Hardware Project
Apple has asked a federal court to stop OpenAI from advancing in the field of physical devices, citing that a former employee used commercial secrets that were not authorized for sharing. Forensic evidence submitted by Apple shows that dozens of confidential documents were stored on the MacBook of former employee Zhang Liu. Zhang, who was a senior electrical systems engineer, joined OpenAI a month ago, and Apple pointed out that one of the documents involved a schematic diagram of a power converter circuit. Apple also claimed that Zhang used these documents for simulations during his tenure at OpenAI and identified a tool that shares the same name as an internal engineering program of his former employer. OpenAI maintains its defense, arguing that the access was due to Apple's failure to deactivate the accounts of departing employees, stating that Zhang retained residual access after leaving. Apple contested this, asserting that Zhang exploited a rare authentication vulnerability to maintain access. Apple has also requested to expedite the evidence disclosure process, demanding relevant documents from August 1, 2023, and mentioned io Products from Tang Tan and Jony Ive. A ruling on the request is expected on October 1.
