Amazon Web Services (AWS) has connected the payment functionality for AI agents with the wallet infrastructure of Coinbase and Stripe. AI agents can handle payments for paid APIs, content, data sources, and fees for other agents. AWS CEO Matt Garman announced that AgentCore Payments has been integrated with both platforms. Developers can create a Payment Manager and connect to the Coinbase developer platform or Stripe's Privy wallet infrastructure through the Payment Connector. Payments are processed via the X402 protocol, and when an agent accesses a paid API or web content, it receives an HTTP 402 Payment Required response. Subsequently, AgentCore Payments handles transaction signatures and payment proofs. Currently, AgentCore Payments is in a preview phase, and features and APIs may change before the official release. Coinbase provides CDP wallets and payment flows, while Stripe connects through the Privy wallet infrastructure. AI agent payments are in the initial infrastructure stage, with primary use cases being paid APIs, MCP servers, and web content access.
