Bitcoin BIP-110 Ends After Two Block Split
The Bitcoin (BTC) data restriction soft fork BIP-110 ended in a two-block split shortly after entering the mandatory signaling period. The attempt to limit arbitrary data usage failed due to a lack of miner support. According to Galaxy Research, the BIP-110 split began at block 961,632 and stopped at block 961,633, which was reached at 7:35:55 PM (UTC) on the 8th. When Antpool mined a non-signaling block, the BIP-110 nodes rejected it, and although Roughneck created a competing block, no further mining occurred. Miner support was only 2.53%, confirming the attempt was effectively a failure. The official name of BIP-110 is 'Reduced Data Temporary Softfork', and its proposal status is marked as 'Closed'. BIP-110 was designed with a one-year temporary rule, and any new output scriptPubKey exceeding 34 bytes is considered invalid. Miner support was low from the beginning, with Coindesk reporting on July 12 that BIP-110 miner support was below 1%. Galaxy stated that Ocean was the only pool to support BIP-110. This case once again demonstrated that a soft fork in Bitcoin cannot be established solely through code proposals.
