Bitwise is collaborating with Superstate to explore the possibility of recording shares of the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) on the blockchain. Reports indicate that the goal is to allow qualified holders to record ETF shares through Superstate's infrastructure, rather than solely relying on traditional securities custody systems. The key term is "exploration": both parties have not announced that all BSOL shares have been tokenized, nor have they specified a complete launch timeline, supported address range, or investor qualifications.
BSOL itself is an exchange-traded product for Solana staking traded on the NYSE Arca. As of July 30, Bitwise's official website shows that the fund's asset size is approximately $588 million, with a goal of using 100% of SOL assets for staking. At that time, the listed 90-day average net staking reward rate was 5.85%. This reward rate may change, does not represent fund performance, and does not guarantee future returns.
Recording on the blockchain will not turn the ETF into another type of SOL. Investors will still hold fund shares, and the fund will continue to hold and stake the underlying SOL. Management fees, custody, valuation, and trading rules will still be determined by the product documents. The change occurs in the ownership record and transfer interface: shares in traditional accounts can add an official record form associated with a blockchain address.
This is also different from issuing an unofficial token that tracks the price of BSOL. True security tokenization requires that the on-chain records align with the issuer, transfer agent, and legal ownership, and that redemption and transfer meet identity and compliance requirements. If a third party merely mints price-mapped tokens, holders may not have direct rights to the original ETF.
The value of on-chain registration lies in allowing securities to enter a 24/7 funding network.
Traditional ETF trading relies on broker accounts, exchange hours, central securities depositories, and bank settlements. On-chain shares can interact with stablecoins and other digital assets within the same technological environment, theoretically reducing friction in cross-platform transfers and providing a foundation for longer trading hours, automated collateralization, and instant settlements. However, these capabilities will not automatically appear just because tokens are issued; regulatory approval and liquidity support are still needed.
BSOL has special symbolic significance: its underlying assets already operate on the blockchain and generate staking rewards, yet the fund shares primarily remain within traditional securities infrastructure. Recording shares on-chain means narrowing the technological gap between the underlying assets and the holding certificates. Investors still gain exposure through regulated products but can use a holding and transfer method closer to digital assets.
Superstate's role is to connect securities issuance with on-chain addresses. Its platform emphasizes official share tokenization rather than simply packaging prices. For asset management companies, the key is not to build wallets, whitelists, and transfer restriction systems from scratch, but to integrate existing fund management processes with an auditable on-chain registration tool.
On-chain registration may also enhance transparency. Public networks can display token supply and transfers, but investor identities, complete fund ledgers, and restricted information will not be fully disclosed. The market needs to avoid misinterpreting "transaction visibility" as "complete transparency of all assets and risks." The custody of underlying SOL, staking node performance, fees, and fund liabilities still rely on formal reporting.
The real challenge is to ensure that on-chain transfers comply with securities regulations simultaneously.
Fund shares are not ordinary tokens that can be freely sent to any address. Issuers must perform customer identity verification, sanctions screening, investor qualification, and transfer restrictions, and must also handle issues like lost addresses, stolen private keys, and court freezes. The tension between on-chain irreversibility and correctable securities registration requires transfer agents or smart contracts to retain necessary control capabilities.
Liquidity may also be fragmented. If the same share exists simultaneously in exchanges, broker accounts, and on-chain addresses, market makers need to allocate between different channels to maintain consistent pricing. When on-chain market transactions are insufficient, tokenized shares may simply represent a new form of holding rather than a more active trading venue. Technically open 24/7 does not equate to having sufficient buying and selling depth at all times.
Investors must also distinguish between fund risks and blockchain risks. BSOL is subject to SOL price, staking, and product structure risks; on-chain shares further introduce smart contract, wallet, and network operational risks. The new registration method can reduce certain settlement frictions but will also introduce new points of failure. Whether it is safer depends on specific implementation and recovery mechanisms, rather than just the term "on-chain."
Tax and corporate actions also need to be uniformly addressed. How staking rewards enter the fund's net asset value, how on-chain holders receive notifications, and how share splits or fee adjustments synchronize all require consistency between traditional ledgers and on-chain records. Any delay on either side could lead to conflicts in balance or rights recognition.
The collaboration between Bitwise and Superstate is noteworthy because it advances tokenization from money market funds and private assets to a publicly traded crypto ETF. However, the most accurate conclusion at this stage is still that both parties are exploring and cannot claim that BSOL has fully departed from traditional custody systems. If the project materializes, what it truly brings is not just another layer of packaging for SOL, but a test of whether regulated securities can access a 24/7, programmable funding network while retaining legal rights.
