Crypto Hacks Reach 212 Incidents, Over 1.1 Billion USD Stolen in H1 2026
In the first half of 2026, attackers executed 212 verified exploits, stealing over 1.1 billion USD, marking the highest incident count for any half-year, according to Blockaid's H1 2026 Onchain Security Report. Although the dollar losses were lower than the same period last year, when the Bybit theft alone accounted for 1.5 billion USD, the data indicates a rise in attack frequency, primarily due to operational failures rather than code vulnerabilities. Blockaid reported 3.4 times more high-threshold exploits in H1 2026 compared to all of 2025. Operational security attacks, including compromised keys and privileged access, constituted 74% of stolen funds, with North Korea-linked groups responsible for 55% of losses. The two largest incidents involved KelpDAO losing 292 million USD on April 18 due to a compromised decentralized verifier, and Drift Protocol losing 285 million USD on April 1 through a governance layer breach. Ethereum and Solana suffered the largest losses, approximately 332 million USD and 326 million USD respectively. The DPRK-linked TraderTraitor subgroup of Lazarus was identified as the most active in these attacks, which totaled around 609 million USD. The trend continued into the second half of the year, with nine exploits reported in the last week of July alone.
