EU Summons Russian Envoy Over German Drone Attack Incident
The European Union summoned the Russian envoy after Germany accused Moscow of being behind the drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. The incident involved a drone loaded with explosives, and German officials claimed that Russian agents were involved in the operation. The drone was found near the runway and beside a Ukrainian cargo plane, and was subsequently neutralized by a bomb disposal team. German Chancellor John Wadephul stated that the construction of the drone was consistent with equipment used in other Russian hybrid operations. Germany also announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn starting September 18 and the termination of the lease for the Russian House in Berlin. Germany plans to tighten entry for Russian citizens and increase pressure on Russia's oil "shadow fleet." Moscow denied involvement in the attack, stating that Berlin had not provided evidence. EU ministers discussed a new round of sanctions, planning to target about 1,600 individuals and entities linked to the Russian military-industrial complex, which is expected to be approved next month. Clues related to digital assets associated with Russia remain an important topic of discussion.
