Germany Ends Protection for Ukrainian Men of Draft Age

The German government will no longer provide temporary protection to Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60 who do not have legal grounds for leaving and exemption from military service. The new restrictions apply to men who arrived in the country after July 31, 2026, when the EU Council implemented the corresponding changes. Now, asylum is granted only to those who have fully completed their military duty. To obtain temporary protection, Ukrainian men must provide documents proving legal border crossing or official exemption from service. Men aged 23 to 60 who arrived before July 31 will retain their protection status until March 2028. The Ministry of the Interior also noted that authorities have the right to deport Ukrainian citizens who are illegally residing in Germany. Since August 5, 2026, the Czech Republic has changed its temporary protection rules for new applicants from Ukraine, requiring proof of legal exit and fulfillment of military obligations. EU countries have agreed to extend the status of temporary protection for those fleeing the war in Ukraine until March 4, 2028.
