Google Removes Google Earth AI Image Tool After One Day Due to Deepfake Concerns

By: rootdata|2026/07/31 20:32:50

Google has removed its newly launched AI feature from Google Earth just one day after its introduction, following backlash from journalists and investigators over potential misuse for creating fake satellite imagery. The tool, launched on July 30, allowed users to generate images from text prompts using the Nano Banana model. By July 31, it was taken down. Google stated that while geospatial professionals found the tool useful, some users shared generated images that violated its policies. Concerns arose over the tool's ability to fabricate events, with examples including a blast crater in Los Angeles and protests outside Google's campus. Open-source researcher Henk van Ess reported that prompts related to sensitive topics were not rejected. Satellite imagery has traditionally been a reliable source for verifying news, and experts warned that the ease of generating fake images could lead to misinformation spreading faster than corrections. Google initially downplayed these concerns, citing the SynthID watermark on images to indicate AI generation and blocking harmful topics. Critics argued that this was inadequate, as many users do not verify images before sharing. Google plans to reinstate the image generation feature only after implementing stricter protections, but no timeline has been provided.
