Investment-Grade Bond Spreads Deviate from Ratings by Approximately $1 Trillion
Global investment-grade corporate credit appears to be fluctuating at very low levels, yet approximately $1 trillion in high-rated non-financial bonds are trading at spreads significantly above their rating ranges. In the U.S., about $580 billion and nearly $400 billion in Europe are all varieties with remaining maturities of over three years. Overall, the spreads of high-rated indices remain near their lowest levels in nearly 25 years, but there are notable dislocations within the component bonds: some single-A bonds have spreads higher than the BBB curve, and even some investment-grade bonds are trading at spreads exceeding those of certain junk bonds. Analysis indicates that AI super-scale computing companies are leveraging debt issuance to increase their weight in the indices, while European and American automakers face competitive pressures from China, software companies are threatened by AI, and insurance companies are penalized due to exposure to private credit assets, all of which are driving this round of structural spread expansion and providing mispricing trading opportunities for active managers. However, if ratings are downgraded or sentiment reverses, the related spreads may be repriced.
