Iran and Oman Close to Reaching Agreement on Managing the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated on August 8 that Iran is negotiating with Oman regarding the legal mechanisms, management methods, and shipping routes for the Strait of Hormuz, and both sides are close to reaching an agreement. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on other conditions, including the United States making amends for its violations of the Iran-U.S. memorandum of understanding. Zarif pointed out that the previous system of separate navigation is no longer applicable, and Iran cannot accept the continuation of the original routes; therefore, a new navigation mechanism needs to be planned, involving complex technical and legal issues. Currently, a temporary navigation route is being discussed, and the official route will be determined based on the temporary channel. The military departments of Iran and Oman have begun consultations based on existing nautical charts, and once negotiations are completed, the new navigation route will be confirmed.
