Kakao is establishing a new company dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) by separating its KakaoTalk-based platform business. The existing company will focus on managing its affiliate businesses in tech-finance, content, and mobility, while the KakaoTalk platform division will be spun off as Kakao AI (tentative name). The newly established company will concentrate its capabilities on core business areas such as AI, advertising, and commerce. A Kakao representative stated that the new company will lead the AI service market by integrating AI technology. The existing company will take on group operations and investment management functions, nurturing and managing affiliates while focusing on optimizing the business portfolio. Through a simple and human division method, existing shareholders will receive shares of the new company at a certain ratio. Kakao has been reorganizing to link KakaoTalk and AI as core businesses, and in June of this year, it launched a ChatGPT chatbot feature in KakaoTalk chat rooms. This decision to spin off is interpreted as a measure to clearly distinguish the integration of KakaoTalk and AI at the organizational level. Kakao is emphasizing its AI strategy on lifestyle services, and specific financial structures and execution schedules will be confirmed through subsequent announcements.

U.S. major indexes closed lower yesterday. Walmart’s weaker-than-expected same-store sales and guidance weighed on the consumer sector and dragged the three major averages lower. Silver and platinum rose sharply, supported by lower yields from expanded long-bond buybacks and a softer dollar. Bitcoin climbed toward $75,000, lifting crypto-related equities. Markets are now focused on the August S&P Global Manufacturing and Services PMI flash readings due on August 21 U.S. Eastern Time, which will directly influence September rate-path pricing.

Expanded U.S. Treasury long-bond buybacks helped pull yields lower and supported a modest rebound in risk appetite, with the major indexes closing slightly higher. At the same time, Bitcoin briefly rose above $70,000 and lifted crypto-linked equities, while positive Phase 3 vaccine data from Merck and Moderna pushed healthcare and biotech stocks higher. SK Hynix’s large-scale buyback also kept attention on the storage cycle and AI-related demand. Markets are continuing to digest the relatively hawkish Fed minutes while positioning ahead of earnings from Alibaba and Walmart.
