Macron Calls for a European Ban on Social Media for Under-15s

Emmanuel Macron has written to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting a European text that prohibits access to social media for those under 15 years old. The aim is to protect all children in the Union, following the Constitutional Council's rejection of a French law on the matter. Macron emphasizes the urgency of this measure and calls for harmonizing rules at the European level, particularly by regulating the addictive features of platforms and introducing default safety standards. Age verification must rely on privacy-respecting solutions, a sensitive point that concerns advocates of privacy. The European Commission has not yet finalized its position, although a committee of experts has recommended a total ban for those under 13. Macron has formed a coalition of European countries in favor of this digital majority while seeking to advance on the national level with a revised legislative text by autumn. Sébastien Lecornu is tasked with drafting this text, aiming for it to be adopted before Macron leaves the Élysée in spring 2027.
