Peter Schiff has pointed to artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential threat to Bitcoin (BTC), sparking a debate over mining infrastructure and security research. Schiff argued that AI could compete with BTC for speculative capital, power, and data center infrastructure, and that more powerful AI could identify vulnerabilities in Bitcoin's code and network. According to Bitcoin.com News, Schiff stated on X on the 23rd, "AI is not a bullish factor for Bitcoin." Over 36 Bitcoin and cryptocurrency companies have demanded that security researchers be granted access to robust models at AI research labs. These companies argue that defenders should also use the tools employed by attackers. Recent cases of vulnerabilities in BTCPay Server and Lightning Nodes have also fueled the controversy. The AI-based volunteer group 'Bitcoin Red Team' has reported vulnerabilities in several projects, leading to patches for the BTCPay Server. Schiff's remarks can be interpreted as a question of how AI might change the cost structure and security practices of industries surrounding BTC, rather than whether AI could bring down BTC itself.
