Polkadot Surpasses Major Networks with Nakamoto Coefficient of 169
Polkadot (DOT) has recorded a Nakamoto coefficient of 169, surpassing major networks in the blockchain decentralization metric. As of September 1, Ton (TON) has a coefficient of 35, Avalanche (AVAX) has 25, and both Solana (SOL) and Sui (SUI) are at 18. Polkadot has 600 validators and a stake of $753.5 million, utilizing a nominated proof-of-stake mechanism and on-chain governance. The Nakamoto coefficient indicates the level of decentralization of a network; a higher number means it is harder for a single entity to control the network. However, this figure is merely a reference for validator distribution and does not provide a comprehensive assessment of decentralization. Polkadot's structure consists of a relay chain and parachains, making it difficult to compare with a single layer 1. Various factors, including the number of validators and stake distribution, must be considered. The data from Chainspect is not fixed, and past snapshots have shown Nakamoto coefficients of 166, 172, and 178. Opinions in the industry are divided regarding this figure, and it is pointed out that a high coefficient does not necessarily indicate an expansion in adoption.
