Sanctions Bill Against Russia Blocked Until Elections
The sanctions bill against Russia, passed by the U.S. Senate, is facing resistance in the House of Representatives and is likely to remain blocked until the elections on November 3. Lawmakers are concerned that it will expand President Donald Trump's powers and lead to rising oil prices. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed doubt about voting on the bill, noting that lawmakers will only be working in Washington for a few days over the next two months. He emphasized the need for proper wording of the law. Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Brian Mast noted that the bill could affect fuel prices, forcing India and other buyers to seek oil from other countries. Democrats are worried that Trump will use the law to impose sweeping tariffs. Congressman Gregory Meeks and Democrat Brad Schneider criticized the bill for giving the president additional powers. Earlier, Senator Richard Blumenthal had mentioned the possibility of the bill being passed in September. On August 7, the Senate supported the sanctions bill against Russia and Iran, with 86 senators voting in favor.
