Solana Reduces Deposit Standard by 9%, Phase 1 of Mainnet Implementation
Solana (SOL) has implemented the first phase of its rent reform on the mainnet, lowering the on-chain account deposit standard from 6960 lamports to 6333 lamports. This adjustment is the first step towards an overall goal of a 90% reduction, which was reflected on the mainnet on September 3, 2026, while phase 2 is currently on the testnet. Solana's rent serves as a refundable deposit to maintain accounts on-chain, and the lamports will be returned when the account is closed. It is estimated that approximately 3.08 million SOL could be released due to this reform, although the Solana Foundation has not specified a concrete figure for the total recoverable amount. Technically, it is distant from automatic distribution, and the WithdrawExcessLamports function can only move excess lamports if specific conditions are met. Once all five phases are completed, the deposit standard will be gradually lowered from 696 to 6333, and immediately after the application of phase 1, the token account rent dropped to about $0.20. It is expected to decrease to around $0.016 once all five phases are completed. However, there are concerns that excessively lowering the account creation cost could increase the risk of state data growth, and a feature to revert lamports_per_byte is planned to address this. The remaining phases 3 to 5 are scheduled to take place in Agave 4.4 in November 2026.
