Sugar Surpasses Bitcoin, Gold, and US Stocks in 2026

The price of raw sugar futures has increased by about 20% since the beginning of 2026, making it one of the best-performing assets of the year. In August, the price of sugar futures contracts surged by 21.5%, marking its best monthly performance since October 2010. Concerns over a decrease in global sugar supply for the 2026-2027 crop year are the main driver of this trend. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) sugar price index reached 106.4 in August, which is 11.9% higher than in July and the highest level since June 2025. Reduced production in the European Union and Brazil, along with the impact of El Niño on production in Asia, are factors putting pressure on the market. The European Commission forecasts that sugar production in 2026/27 will decrease by 19% to 13.4 million tons. Citibank predicts a global market deficit of 1.3 million tons. Bitcoin is trading near $79,800, with a performance of about -8.8% since the beginning of the year. Gold rose about 10% in August, but a price drop in September reduced its yield to 1.7%. The S&P 500 index has grown by about 13% in 2026. Citibank considers sugar to be its most bullish option among agricultural commodities, expecting its price to reach 19 cents per pound.
