Third Wave of Bitcoin Wallet Hacking: Losses Reach 1.86 Trillion Won
A wave of hacking attacks targeting Bitcoin (BTC) wallets has spread into its third phase, with losses amounting to 1,367 BTC, approximately $1.286 billion (around 1.86 trillion won). This attack was detected early Sunday morning, with a total of 208 BTC leaked from 1,912 addresses between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning (UTC). The average amount leaked per victim was 0.1 BTC, indicating a decrease in the scale compared to the initial attack, but the number of targets has widened. The first attack occurred on July 30, resulting in the theft of 1,083 BTC from 1,196 addresses. Cumulatively, the total losses have reached 1,367 BTC across 4,585 addresses. A notable feature of this attack is 'obfuscation,' as the victims' Bitcoins were moved to different addresses in a distributed manner. The assets were converted to a 'P2WSH' format instead of the traditional single-key method, complicating the analysis of the fund flows. The attack method has also evolved, with an average of six individuals being grouped together to move funds. There is debate in the market about whether the same attacker has modified their strategy or if a different attacker is exploiting the same vulnerabilities. The source of the attack is linked to the coldcard wallet firmware released in March 2021, which utilized a predictable software random number generator, resulting in limited key combinations. The attacks are ongoing, although the average amount stolen is decreasing.
