Ukrzaliznytsia Plans to Increase Grain Transit Through Moldova to 4.5 Million Tons Per Year

By: delo.ua|2026/09/04 16:01:41

The joint-stock company "Ukrzaliznytsia" estimates the export potential of grain transportation through Moldova at 4.5 million tons per year and is considering opportunities for further increasing the cargo flow. This estimate was previously voiced by the former head of the Moldovan Railways, Oleg Tofilat. Currently, the capacity of the route is 500-800 thousand tons. To increase transportation volumes, it is necessary to improve the processing capacity of border stations, eliminate technological constraints, and optimize control procedures. "Ukrzaliznytsia" also reports the impossibility of introducing additional discounts on domestic tariffs due to the risks of worsening financial conditions. Since the end of July, meetings have been held with carriers from Moldova, Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia to develop mechanisms to alleviate infrastructure constraints. As of August 10, an agreement on a 50% discount on transit railway transportation of Ukrainian goods is in effect until the end of 2026. In August, "Ukrzaliznytsia" transported nearly 1.3 million tons of grain, which is 34.7% less than in July.
