Water Level in the Danube in Romania Reaches 30-Year Low, Grain Ports Closed

The water level in the Danube in Romania has dropped to its lowest point since 1996, leading to the closure of Romanian grain ports and forcing operators to switch to more expensive logistics routes. The drought is attributed to prolonged periods of heat and dryness in Europe. On July 19, the water flow entering the Danube in Romania was about 1,700 m³/s, while the average for July is 4,700 m³/s. The decrease in water level has exposed large sandy areas, prompting authorities to partially halt navigation, and some ferry crossings are temporarily out of service. Grain market expert Cezar George noted that all Danube ports transporting agricultural raw materials are effectively blocked. Romania, one of the largest producers and exporters of grain in the EU, relies on river routes to deliver agricultural products to Black Sea ports. Farmers risk failing to meet contract terms due to the inability to ship goods, while economic operators are seeking more expensive alternatives. Additionally, authorities have restricted farmers' access to irrigation systems due to water shortages in southeastern Romania.
