To disconnect a WalletConnect session, open either your wallet’s connected apps list or the dApp’s wallet menu, select the active session, and tap “Disconnect.” This matters because closing a browser tab does not reliably end the session, while a proper disconnect reduces ongoing access to your public wallet data and stops the dApp from continuing to send signature or transaction requests.

How Do You Disconnect a WalletConnect Session Step by Step?

For most users, the fastest method is from the wallet side. Open your wallet app, go to the WalletConnect, Connected Apps, or Active Sessions area, find the dApp you connected to, and choose Disconnect. Many wallets present all live sessions in one place, which makes it easier to review old connections instead of guessing which sites still have access.

You can often disconnect from the dApp side as well. Many decentralized apps show a wallet address, account icon, or connection badge in the top-right area of the interface. Clicking that menu usually reveals options such as Disconnect, Logout, or Manage Connection.

If you actively use crypto apps and trading tools across multiple devices, keeping account management organized matters just as much as session hygiene. Some users centralize their trading activity on the WEEX Exchange while using separate wallets for on-chain interactions, which can make it easier to review where WalletConnect sessions are still open.

Why Does Disconnecting WalletConnect Matter for Security and Privacy?

A WalletConnect session is more than a temporary popup. It is an active connection between a wallet and a dApp that stays valid until you disconnect it or until it expires. That means leaving a website or closing a mobile browser does not necessarily shut the connection down.

Disconnecting matters because an active session can continue to expose some wallet-related information and allow the dApp to keep requesting actions. Depending on the wallet and permissions involved, a connected dApp may still be able to view your public address, parts of your wallet contents, and transaction history, and it may keep prompting you to sign messages or approve transactions.

That does not mean every connected dApp is malicious. The point is minimizing unnecessary exposure. If you are done minting, swapping, staking, or signing, there is little reason to leave the session open.

What Happens If You Only Close the Browser Tab?

In many cases, not much happens to the session itself. WalletConnect sessions are designed to persist across devices and apps, which is one reason the protocol is useful. But that convenience also creates a common user mistake: assuming that closing a page equals disconnecting access.

It usually does not. The session can remain active until manual disconnection or expiry. As of now, some third-party guides note that sessions can last for several days by default, although the exact duration depends on the wallet implementation. The practical takeaway is simple: if you want the connection gone, disconnect it directly.

What Does WalletConnect Say About Session Deletion and Expiry?

From the protocol perspective, a session stays active until the user disconnects or the session expires. WalletConnect documentation also distinguishes between a session that is actively deleted and one that expires naturally. Those are separate lifecycle events, not the same state.

For developers, ending a session is typically handled by a disconnect function that triggers session deletion. The other side should receive a session_delete event so both wallet and dApp can update their interface and internal state correctly. A separate session_expire event covers cases where the connection times out instead of being manually terminated.

This distinction matters for users too. A session that silently remains active can create confusion, especially if one side appears disconnected while the other still thinks the connection exists.

How Are Disconnecting and Revoking Token Approvals Different?

Disconnecting a WalletConnect session is not the same thing as revoking token approvals. A disconnect ends the live connection between your wallet and the dApp interface. It stops the dApp from continuing to interact with your wallet through that session.

Token approvals are separate on-chain permissions. For example, if you approved a smart contract to spend a token, that approval may still exist on-chain even after you disconnect WalletConnect. In other words, disconnecting helps with session access, but it does not automatically erase earlier spending permissions you already signed.

ActionWhat It EndsWhat It Does Not Automatically End
Disconnect WalletConnectActive wallet-dApp sessionPast on-chain token approvals
Revoke approvalSpecific smart contract spending permissionOther wallet sessions with dApps

When Should You Disconnect a WalletConnect Session?

You should disconnect after finishing a task such as swapping, staking, minting, bridging, voting, or signing a one-time message. Disconnecting is especially important on shared devices, work phones, tablets, and browsers that stay logged in for long periods.

You should also review sessions if you connected to an unfamiliar dApp, tested a beta product, used a temporary campaign page, or signed in through a link from social media. Even if nothing harmful happens, reducing the number of open sessions lowers clutter and cuts the chance of approving something later without enough attention.

What Should You Do If a WalletConnect Session Will Not Disconnect?

If a session appears stuck, first try disconnecting from both sides: the wallet app and the dApp interface. If that fails, close the app completely, reopen it, and check the active session list again. Some wallets also let you clear connected app data or privacy data for all current dApp permissions.

If the dApp still appears connected, the issue may be a delayed state update rather than a real active session. In that case, refreshing the dApp or reconnecting once and then disconnecting cleanly can help reset the display. If you are still unsure, treat the connection as active until your wallet no longer lists it.

What Are the Best Habits for Managing WalletConnect Sessions?

The best practice is simple: connect only when needed, verify the dApp before approving, and disconnect when finished. It also helps to maintain a routine review of your active sessions inside the wallet every so often.

Many experienced users separate wallets by purpose. One wallet may be for long-term holdings, another for DeFi, and another for testing new dApps. This does not eliminate risk, but it can limit exposure if a connected app becomes a problem.

Good session hygiene includes these habits:

    • Check the dApp name before approving a connection.
    • Use the wallet’s active sessions page regularly.
    • Disconnect after completing a task.
    • Review and revoke on-chain approvals separately when necessary.
    • Avoid leaving old sessions active for convenience.
