The Taiwanese government is investigating a cyberattack detected on July 20 against state agencies, which reportedly used artificial intelligence tools to automate operations. The Digital Affairs Administration (MDA) reported the incident and initiated an investigation. The Israeli company Dream, which analyzed the intrusion, indicated that the attackers employed open-source AI agents to develop a coordinated hacking tool, describing the episode as an unprecedented security breach. At least 85 accounts of government users were compromised, and more than 2,500 personnel records were accessed, also affecting the Nuclear Security Agency and seven companies in the energy sector. The MDA noted that the attack exhibited characteristics of a foreign source, combining manual actions with automated resources. Although the Taiwanese government did not publicly attribute the attack to China, Dream detected the use of simplified Chinese in the operators' communications, suggesting a possible link. This incident occurs against a backdrop of Taiwan's allegations of a pressure campaign from China, which includes cyberattacks. In 2025, cyberattacks against strategic sectors increased by 6%, reaching an average of 2.63 million attempts per day. The use of AI in malicious operations raises concerns about the speed of executing tasks such as system reconnaissance, although human intervention is required to define targets.
