Google Adjusts Android App Quality Requirements to Address Memory Shortages

By: techcrunch.com|2026/08/28 00:44:19

Google has announced two new quality requirements for Android apps to address the industry-wide memory chip shortage triggered by the AI data center boom. The new requirements focus on reducing in-app memory usage and optimizing code, aiming to tackle the hardware supply constraints faced by the mobile industry that affect user experience. Google has set new performance thresholds in areas such as dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage, and has increased code optimization requirements to prevent app stuttering and crashes. The company will introduce new tools to alert developers to optimize when apps exceed the thresholds, with more diagnostic tools set to be launched later this year, including a Memory Limiter feature that prevents apps from excessively consuming device memory. Developers are required to meet the new thresholds by February 2027, and all Play Store apps must comply with the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement by April 2027, which automatically restores user login states. These changes aim to help app and game developers continue to deliver quality experiences in a market with limited memory supply, particularly for price-sensitive low-end devices.
