S&P 500 Q2 Earnings Growth of 31%, Year-End Target Raised to 7894 Points
The earnings of S&P 500 constituents grew by 31% year-on-year in the second quarter, exceeding the expected 23%, marking the strongest increase since 1992. Over 90% of the constituents have reported their earnings, and the overall performance in the first half of the year is expected to be the best since 2021. Analysts point out that the earnings beat expectations due to the resilience of the U.S. economy and the profit margin improvements brought by AI, with net profit margins rising from 14% to nearly 16%. Mark Hackett, Chief Market Strategist at Nationwide, stated that AI has transformed into a profit center this year. The S&P 500's price-to-earnings ratio for the next 12 months has decreased from about 26 times at the beginning of the year to just below 22 times, and Wall Street strategists have raised the year-end target to 7894 points, indicating about a 1% upside from historical highs. The full-year earnings growth expectation has been revised up from 15% at the beginning of the year to 27%. This round of earnings growth is no longer limited to large tech companies, as about three-quarters of the companies that have disclosed their performance achieved earnings per share and revenue above expectations, with healthcare being the only sector experiencing a contraction in profits.
