What are Bollinger Bands? The Trading Minute
The calm before the storm. The moving average smooths the price, but it says nothing about its temperament. Bollinger Bands frame this average with two limits that breathe with the market: they tighten when volatility eases and widen when it spikes. So, three lines: a simple moving average in the center, and two bands drawn a certain number of standard deviations above and below. Nothing mystical about it. Just a statistical snapshot of the recent price range, updated with each candle.
The Squeeze, or the Calm Before the Storm
When the two bands tighten to the point of almost touching, traders refer to it as a squeeze. The market stalls, prices compress into a narrow corridor, and the standard deviation measuring this dispersion collapses. A squeeze never indicates which direction the market will explode: it only states that it will move, and strongly.
It’s the reverse mechanics of a stretched elastic: the longer the compression lasts, the more likely the release will be brutal, much like a drawdown that accumulates silently before revealing itself all at once. Experienced traders typically wait for a clear close above or below a band, confirmed by volume, before positioning themselves. Entering solely on the promise of a squeeze is akin to betting on a direction without having seen the map.
Bitcoin, May 7, 2026: The Breakout Validated by Its Creator
The most striking demonstration came from the inventor of the tool himself. After several weeks of compression, the tightest ever recorded on its daily chart according to CoinDesk, Bitcoin closed on May 7, 2026, above its upper band at $80,484 against a band then set at $81,549. This was the second close of this type since mid-January.
A sign that the signal was not trivial: John Bollinger himself, creator of the indicator, announced that one of the proprietary models of his fund had just turned positive on Bitcoin, and that he had taken a position accordingly, following this bullish signal. When the creator of a tool uses it for his own money, the squeeze takes on a whole new dimension.
A Band Never Indicates Where to Go
A close above the upper band is also not an automatic sell signal, contrary to a persistent misconception. In a strongly trending market, the price can stick to the band for days without any reversal. This is where crossing the tool with a second indicator becomes useful: an RSI that confirms the strength of the movement rather than a divergence adds more weight to the breakout than a band observed alone.
For a retail trader, the practical utility boils down to a simple rule: monitor extreme compression phases on the tracked assets, rather than reacting afterward to a movement that has already begun. Coupled with a clear risk/reward ratio, this proactive vigilance allows time to prepare a scenario in both directions before the market decides for itself.
